Monitor AI research papers with Gemini-powered filtering and email summaries
This n8n workflow template implements an intelligent research paper monitoring system that automatically tracks new publications in ArXiv's Artificial Intelligence category, filters them for relevance using LLM-based analysis, generates structured summaries, and delivers a formatted email digest.
The system uses a three-stage pipeline architecture:
- automated paper retrieval from ArXiv's API
- AI-powered relevance filtering and analysis via Google Gemini
- Intelligent summarization with HTML formatting for clean email delivery
This eliminates the need to manually browse ArXiv daily while ensuring you only receive summaries of papers genuinely relevant to your research interests.
What This Template Does (Step-by-Step)
- Runs on a configurable schedule (Tuesday-Friday) to fetch new papers from ArXiv's cs.AI category via their API.
- Uses Google Gemini with structured output parsing to analyze each paper's relevance based on your defined criteria for "applicable AI research."
- Generates concise, structured summaries for the three selected papers using a separate LLM call
- Aggregates three relevant paper's data and summaries into a single, readable digest
Important Notes
- The workflow only runs Tuesday through Friday, as ArXiv typically doesn't publish new papers on weekends
- Customize the "Paper Relevance Analyzer" criteria to match your specific research interests
- Adjust the similarity threshold and selection logic to control how many papers are included in each digest
Required Integrations:
- ArXiv API (no authentication required)
- Google Gemini API (for relevance analysis and summarization)
- Email service (SMTP or email provider like Gmail, SendGrid, etc.)
Best For:
🎓 Academic researchers tracking AI developments in their field 💼 ML practitioners and data scientists staying current with new techniques 🧠 AI enthusiasts who want curated, digestible research updates 🏢 Technical teams needing regular competitive intelligence on emerging approaches
Key Benefits:
✅ Automates daily ArXiv monitoring, saving 60+ minutes of manual research time ✅ Uses AI to pre-filter papers, reducing information overload by 80-90% ✅ Delivers structured, readable summaries instead of raw abstracts ✅ Fully customizable relevance criteria to match your specific interests ✅ Professional HTML formatting makes digests easy to scan and share ✅ Eliminates the risk of missing important papers in your field
Monitor AI Research Papers with Gemini-Powered Filtering and Email Summaries
This n8n workflow automates the process of staying updated on the latest AI research papers. It fetches new papers from arXiv, intelligently filters them using Google Gemini based on predefined keywords, and then compiles and sends a summary of relevant papers via email.
What it does
- Schedules a Trigger: The workflow is set to run on a predefined schedule (e.g., daily, weekly) to check for new papers.
- Fetches Latest AI Papers: It makes an HTTP request to the arXiv API to retrieve a list of the most recent AI research papers.
- Parses XML Data: The raw XML response from arXiv is parsed into a structured JSON format for easier processing.
- Filters with Google Gemini: Each paper is individually evaluated by a Google Gemini AI Agent. The agent uses a predefined prompt and a structured output parser to determine if the paper is relevant based on specified keywords (e.g., "Large Language Models", "Generative AI", "AI Ethics").
- Aggregates Relevant Papers: Papers identified as relevant by the AI Agent are collected.
- Generates Email Summary: A concise summary of all relevant papers is generated, including titles and links.
- Sends Email Notification: The generated summary is sent to a specified email address, providing a convenient digest of the latest relevant AI research.
- Error Handling: If any critical error occurs during the process, the workflow stops and reports the error.
Prerequisites/Requirements
- n8n Instance: A running instance of n8n.
- Google Gemini API Key: An API key for Google Gemini (configured as a credential in n8n).
- SMTP Credentials: SMTP server details for sending emails (configured as a credential in n8n).

🎓 How to transform unstructured email data into structured format with AI agent
This workflow automates the process of extracting structured, usable information from unstructured email messages across multiple platforms. It connects directly to Gmail, Outlook, and IMAP accounts, retrieves incoming emails, and sends their content to an AI-powered parsing agent built on OpenAI GPT models. The AI agent analyzes each email, identifies relevant details, and returns a clean JSON structure containing key fields: From – sender’s email address To – recipient’s email address Subject – email subject line Summary – short AI-generated summary of the email body The extracted information is then automatically inserted into an n8n Data Table, creating a structured database of email metadata and summaries ready for indexing, reporting, or integration with other tools. --- Key Benefits ✅ Full Automation: Eliminates manual reading and data entry from incoming emails. ✅ Multi-Source Integration: Handles data from different email providers seamlessly. ✅ AI-Driven Accuracy: Uses advanced language models to interpret complex or unformatted content. ✅ Structured Storage: Creates a standardized, query-ready dataset from previously unstructured text. ✅ Time Efficiency: Processes emails in real time, improving productivity and response speed. *✅ Scalability: Easily extendable to handle additional sources or extract more data fields. --- How it works This workflow automates the transformation of unstructured email data into a structured, queryable format. It operates through a series of connected steps: Email Triggering: The workflow is initiated by one of three different email triggers (Gmail, Microsoft Outlook, or a generic IMAP account), which constantly monitor for new incoming emails. AI-Powered Parsing & Structuring: When a new email is detected, its raw, unstructured content is passed to a central "Parsing Agent." This agent uses a specified OpenAI language model to intelligently analyze the email text. Data Extraction & Standardization: Following a predefined system prompt, the AI agent extracts key information from the email, such as the sender, recipient, subject, and a generated summary. It then forces the output into a strict JSON structure using a "Structured Output Parser" node, ensuring data consistency. Data Storage: Finally, the clean, structured data (the from, to, subject, and summarize fields) is inserted as a new row into a specified n8n Data Table, creating a searchable and reportable database of email information. --- Set up steps To implement this workflow, follow these configuration steps: Prepare the Data Table: Create a new Data Table within n8n. Define the columns with the following names and string type: From, To, Subject, and Summary. Configure Email Credentials: Set up the credential connections for the email services you wish to use (Gmail OAuth2, Microsoft Outlook OAuth2, and/or IMAP). Ensure the accounts have the necessary permissions to read emails. Configure AI Model Credentials: Set up the OpenAI API credential with a valid API key. The workflow is configured to use the model, but this can be changed in the respective nodes if needed. Connect the Nodes: The workflow canvas is already correctly wired. Visually confirm that the email triggers are connected to the "Parsing Agent," which is connected to the "Insert row" (Data Table) node. Also, ensure the "OpenAI Chat Model" and "Structured Output Parser" are connected to the "Parsing Agent" as its AI model and output parser, respectively. Activate the Workflow: Save the workflow and toggle the "Active" switch to ON. The triggers will begin polling for new emails according to their schedule (e.g., every minute), and the automation will start processing incoming messages. --- Need help customizing?
