Overview

This workflow automates weather forecast delivery by collecting city names, fetching 5-day forecasts from OpenWeatherMap, and generating professionally formatted HTML emails using GPT-4. The AI creates condition-based color-coded reports with safety precautions and sends them via Gmail.

How It Works

A form trigger collects up to three city names, which are geocoded via OpenWeatherMap API to retrieve coordinates and 5-day forecasts.

JavaScript nodes process the raw weather data into daily summaries, calculating temperature ranges, precipitation levels, wind speeds, and dominant weather conditions.

GPT-4 then generates professionally formatted HTML emails with condition-based color coding: The AI intelligently adds contextual safety warnings for heavy rain, extreme heat, high winds, and thunderstorms.

A validation node ensures proper JSON formatting before Gmail sends the final briefing.

This n8n workflow automates the process of fetching weather forecasts for multiple cities, enhancing the forecast data with AI-driven formatting, and sending the personalized weather updates via Gmail. It simplifies the task of keeping stakeholders informed about weather conditions in various locations with clear, well-structured emails.

What it does

  1. Triggers on Form Submission: The workflow starts when a form is submitted, likely containing the list of cities for which to fetch weather data.
  2. Fetches Weather Data: For each specified city, it uses the OpenWeatherMap API to retrieve the current weather forecast.
  3. Aggregates Weather Data: It merges the weather data from all cities into a single data stream.
  4. Formats Data with AI: It utilizes the OpenAI API to take the raw weather data and format it into a more readable and aesthetically pleasing text, suitable for an email. This step enhances the presentation of the forecast.

Prerequisites/Requirements

  • n8n Instance: A running instance of n8n.

  • Gmail Account: A configured Gmail credential in n8n to send emails.

Setup/Usage

  1. Import the workflow: Import the provided JSON into your n8n instance.
  2. Configure Credentials:
    • OpenWeatherMap: Add your OpenWeatherMap API key as a credential.
    • OpenAI: Add your OpenAI API key as a credential.
    • Gmail: Set up your Gmail OAuth2 or API Key credential.
  3. Configure "On form submission" Trigger:
    • Define the form fields that will provide the city names (e.g., a comma-separated list of cities).
  4. Configure "Edit Fields (Set)" Node:
    • Ensure this node correctly extracts and prepares the city names from the trigger output for the OpenWeatherMap node.
  5. Configure "OpenWeatherMap" Node:
    • Select your OpenWeatherMap credential.
    • Map the city input from the previous node.
  6. Configure "OpenAI" Node:
    • Select your OpenAI credential.
    • Set up the prompt to instruct the AI on how to format the incoming weather data into a coherent and well-structured email body.
  7. Configure "Gmail" Node:
    • Select your Gmail credential.
    • Specify the recipient(s) email address.
