Overview
This workflow provides a universal webhook endpoint that dynamically routes incoming requests to different subflows. It allows you to manage multiple API-like endpoints from a single entry point, while ensuring proper error handling and consistent responses.
How it works
- Webhook Receiver – A single URL accepts requests.
- Method Detection – Branches capture the request method.
- Route Resolver – Matches the
actionparameter and method against your route configuration. - Execute Subflow – If valid, the matching workflow is executed.
- Error Handling – If invalid, the workflow responds with a clear status code and JSON error.
About the action parameter
The action query parameter is the key that controls routing:
- In your Routes Config, every route is defined with an
actionname, a list of allowed HTTP methods, and the target subflow ID. - When a request comes in, the workflow looks up the provided
actionin this config. - If the action is valid and the method is allowed, the corresponding subflow is executed.
- If not, the workflow returns a structured error.
In other words:
- Config side → map
action→ subflow ID - Request side → send
?action=...→ determines which subflow runs
This makes action both the mapping key in the configuration and the control key for triggering the correct logic.
Setup steps
- Import the workflow into n8n.
- Define your routes in the Routes Config node. Each route contains:
actionname- allowed HTTP methods
- target subflow ID

Dynamic API Gateway with HTTP Router and Workflow Orchestration
This n8n workflow acts as a dynamic API gateway, routing incoming HTTP requests to different sub-workflows based on the request path. It allows for flexible API endpoint management and orchestration of various backend processes.
What it does
This workflow orchestrates the following steps:
- Listens for Incoming HTTP Requests: It starts by waiting for any HTTP request sent to its webhook URL.
- Extracts Request Path: It processes the incoming request to extract the path from the URL.
- Routes Based on Path: It uses an
Ifnode to check the extracted path:- If the path matches
/workflow1, it executes a sub-workflow named "Workflow 1". - If the path matches
/workflow2, it executes a sub-workflow named "Workflow 2". - If the path does not match either, it proceeds to a default response.
- If the path matches
- Executes Sub-workflows: For matching paths, it triggers a designated sub-workflow.
- Responds to Request:
- If a sub-workflow is successfully executed, it responds to the original HTTP request with the output from the executed sub-workflow.
- If no path matches, or if an error occurs, it responds with a default "Not Found" message and a 404 status code.
Prerequisites/Requirements
- n8n Instance: An active n8n instance where this workflow can be imported and run.
- Sub-workflows: Two existing n8n sub-workflows named "Workflow 1" and "Workflow 2" (or whatever names you configure in the
Execute Sub-workflownodes) that this gateway will orchestrate. These sub-workflows should be designed to accept input from and return output to theExecute Sub-workflownode.
Setup/Usage
- Import the workflow: Import the provided JSON into your n8n instance.
- Activate the workflow: Ensure the workflow is active to start listening for incoming requests.
- Configure Sub-workflows:
- Open the
Execute Sub-workflownodes (named "Workflow 1" and "Workflow 2"). - Select the actual n8n workflows you intend to execute for each path.
- Open the
- Test the Gateway:
- Copy the webhook URL from the
Webhooktrigger node. - Send HTTP requests to this URL with different paths:
