Get Alerted When Your Website Is Down – n8n as an Uptime Robot Alternative

If you manage a website (or client sites), getting notified when your site goes down is critical. But you’ve probably experienced alert fatigue if you’ve ever received a flood of downtime emails for every tiny outage. These short hiccups are common, and most monitoring tools don’t let you filter them out.
Here’s how you can set up website downtime notifications with n8n - no extra subscriptions, and no more false positives spamming your inbox. For your most important sites, you can even get direct text alerts to your phone.
We’ll use n8n, a powerful automation tool with thousands of templates and integrations. You can run it in the cloud or even self-host it for free.
Why Use n8n for Website Monitoring?
Uptime Robot and similar services have limitations or get expensive fast if you monitor several sites. n8n gives you full control - you choose when and how you get notified, set your own timing and thresholds, and you aren’t stuck with default alert logic.
Plus, n8n can automate much more than just uptime monitoring: use it to handle other business workflows too.
Quick Start: Free n8n Website Monitoring Template
- Use the template to get started fast.
- Log in or sign up for n8n Cloud, or self-host for free if you prefer.
- Configure your schedule (default: hourly) and list the sites you want to monitor.
- Key setting: wait seconds. Recommended: 300 seconds (5 minutes). If your site goes down, the workflow waits before sending an alert—no notification for a 1-2 minute outage, only real, persistent problems.
How to Test & Use
- Activate the workflow.
Toggle it on in n8n and it’ll check your sites automatically. - Test instantly:
Add a non-existent URL and run the workflow. After the wait time, you’ll get an email alert for that URL. - Notifications stay organized:
Alerts go straight to your inbox (see my AI email labelling template if you want color-coded organization).
Get Critical Alerts on Your Phone (Telegram)
Email is great, but for your most important sites you want instant notifications on your phone.
Best option: Use Telegram. n8n can send you messages via a Telegram bot—easy to set up, free, and works in seconds.
How:
- Create a Telegram bot via BotFather (instructions in the template).
- Add your bot token and chat ID to n8n.
- Now, you’ll get downtime alerts right on Telegram—no missed notifications, no extra costs.
FAQ
- Can I monitor unlimited sites?
Yes, just list them all in the config. - What if downtime is just a few seconds?
The default 5-minute wait filters these out. - Do I need a paid n8n plan?
No - self-hosting is free, and the workflow works on free plans. - Why not SMS or WhatsApp?
Telegram bots are fastest, easiest, and don’t require extra API setup or subscriptions.
Website Down Checker - Uptime Robot Alternative
This n8n workflow provides a robust, customizable, and unlimited website uptime monitoring solution, serving as an effective alternative to services like Uptime Robot. It periodically checks the status of specified websites and sends alerts via Telegram and/or Gmail if a website is found to be down.
Description
This workflow automates the process of checking multiple website URLs for their availability. It runs on a schedule, performs HTTP requests to each URL, and then intelligently notifies you if any website is unreachable. This allows for proactive monitoring and quick response to website outages.
What it does
- Schedules Checks: The workflow is triggered on a predefined schedule (e.g., every 5 minutes) to initiate website checks.
- Defines Websites to Monitor: A "Sticky Note" node is used to store a list of website URLs to be monitored. This makes it easy to add or remove websites without modifying complex node configurations.
- Splits URLs: Each URL from the list is processed individually.
- Performs HTTP Requests: For each URL, an HTTP GET request is made to check its status.
- Checks Response Status: The workflow then evaluates the HTTP response status code to determine if the website is up or down.
- Filters for Down Websites: It identifies websites that returned an error or an undesirable status code (indicating they are down).
- Delays for Retries (Optional): A "Wait" node can be configured to introduce a delay before a potential re-check or to prevent alert flooding. (Note: The provided JSON doesn't explicitly show a retry logic, but a "Wait" node is present, suggesting potential for expansion).
- Routes Notifications: A "Switch" node directs the flow based on the check results.
- Sends Telegram Alerts: If a website is down, a notification is sent to a specified Telegram chat.
- Sends Gmail Alerts: Alternatively or additionally, an email alert is sent via Gmail for down websites.
- Merges Results: The results from different paths (e.g., successful checks, failed checks) can be merged for further processing or logging (though the current JSON doesn't show explicit merging after alerts).
Prerequisites/Requirements
- n8n Instance: A running n8n instance (self-hosted or cloud).
- Telegram Bot Token & Chat ID: For sending alerts via Telegram. You'll need to create a Telegram Bot and get your chat ID.
- Gmail Account & Credentials: For sending alerts via Gmail. You'll need to configure OAuth2 credentials for Gmail in n8n.
Setup/Usage
- Import the Workflow:
- Copy the provided JSON content.
- In your n8n instance, go to "Workflows" and click "New".
- Click the "Import from JSON" button and paste the JSON.
- Configure the Schedule Trigger:
- Open the "Schedule Trigger" node.
- Set your desired interval for checking websites (e.g., every 5 minutes, every hour).
- Define Websites to Monitor:
- Open the "Sticky Note" node.
- Edit the content to list the URLs you want to monitor, one URL per line.
- Configure Telegram Node:
- Open the "Telegram" node.
- Select or create a new Telegram credential.
- Enter your Telegram Bot Token and the Chat ID where you want to receive alerts.
- Configure Gmail Node:
- Open the "Gmail" node.
- Select or create a new Gmail OAuth2 credential.
- Configure the "To" email address, "Subject", and "Body" for the alert emails.
- Activate the Workflow:
- Save the workflow.
- Toggle the workflow to "Active" in the top right corner of the n8n editor.
The workflow will now run on your defined schedule, checking your websites and notifying you of any downtime.
