Summarize Documents, Images, and Spreadsheets with Gemma 3 on Ollama

This n8n workflow automates the process of summarizing various file types (documents, images, and spreadsheets) using the Gemma 3 large language model running on Ollama. It monitors a local directory for new files, identifies their type, extracts their content, and then generates a summary using an AI agent.

What it does

  1. Monitors Local Directory: Listens for new or updated files in a specified local directory.
  2. Reads File Content: Reads the binary content of the detected file from disk.
  3. Determines File Type: Uses a Switch node to route the workflow based on the file's extension (e.g., PDF, image, spreadsheet).
  4. Extracts Text from Files:
    • For documents (PDF, DOCX, TXT), it extracts the text content.
    • For images, it uses an AI agent to describe the image.
    • For spreadsheets (CSV, XLSX), it converts the file to a readable format and extracts relevant data.
  5. Summarizes with AI Agent: Passes the extracted content or description to an AI Agent powered by the Gemma 3 model running on Ollama to generate a concise summary.

Prerequisites/Requirements

  • n8n Instance: A running n8n instance.

Setup/Usage

  1. Import the Workflow:
