Control your n8n instance remotely with Telegram bot commands
This workflow contains community nodes that are only compatible with the self-hosted version of n8n.
Your n8n Command Center in a Telegram Chat
Remotely manage and operate your n8n instance from Telegram with powerful admin commands.
This workflow connects your n8n instance with a Telegram Bot, giving you remote control over key admin operations through simple chat commands.
π± You can
-
List your workflows (workflows)
-
Execute a workflow (execute [name])
-
Activate/deactivate workflows (activate [name], deactivate [name])
-
List past executions (executions [name])
-
Permanently delete archived workflows (cleanup)
-
Create backups of all your workflows and credentials (backup)
-
Get help (help)
-
Get notified when a workflow fails and when n8n instance starts.
This is especially useful for self-hosted instances when you want quick access to your automation environment from your mobile device.
π Notes
- backup only works on self-hosted setups.
- execute, activate, deactivate, and executions require the workflow name as argument.
- Workflows must contain the appropriate trigger nodes to be executed or activated.
- Commands and arguments are not case sensitive, there is no need to prefix with slash and spaces in the argument name are supported.
βοΈ Setup
- Create your credentials for Telegram API and n8n API.
- Edit all Telegram and n8n nodes. Select your credentials on them. On telegram nodes provide your chatid.
- Detailed step-by-step instructions are available in the workflow notes.
- In each workflow that fails and you want to receive a warning, configure this workflow as Error Workflow in its settings.
n8n Remote Control via Telegram Bot Commands
This n8n workflow allows you to remotely control your n8n instance and manage workflows using commands sent through a Telegram bot. It provides a convenient way to interact with your n8n environment from anywhere, offering functionalities like listing workflows, activating/deactivating them, and triggering executions.
What it does
This workflow acts as a Telegram bot command handler for your n8n instance.
- Listens for Telegram Commands: It starts by listening for incoming messages in a Telegram chat.
- Parses Commands: It extracts the command and any arguments from the received Telegram message.
- Authenticates User: It checks if the sender's Telegram chat ID is authorized to execute commands.
- Routes Commands: It uses a Switch node to route the message to the appropriate action based on the command received (e.g.,
/list_workflows,/activate_workflow,/deactivate_workflow,/execute_workflow,/error_workflow). - Performs n8n Actions:
/list_workflows: Retrieves and sends a list of all workflows on the n8n instance back to Telegram./activate_workflow [workflow_id]: Activates a specified workflow by its ID./deactivate_workflow [workflow_id]: Deactivates a specified workflow by its ID./execute_workflow [workflow_id]: Triggers an execution of a specified workflow by its ID./error_workflow: Triggers a dummy error workflow (likely for testing the error handling capabilities).
- Executes Shell Commands: The workflow also includes an
Execute Commandnode, which could be used for advanced operations like running CLI commands on the host server, though its specific use case within this workflow isn't explicitly defined without its configuration. - Handles Errors: An
Error Triggernode suggests that this workflow is designed to be part of an error handling system, potentially reporting issues back to Telegram. - Sends Telegram Responses: After executing a command, it sends a confirmation or result message back to the Telegram chat.
Prerequisites/Requirements
- n8n Instance: A running n8n instance where this workflow will be imported.
- Telegram Bot: A Telegram bot token and the chat ID of the authorized user(s) to interact with the bot. You will need to create a bot via BotFather on Telegram.
- n8n API Key: An n8n API key (or basic authentication) configured for the n8n node to interact with your instance's API.
- Workflow IDs: Knowledge of the IDs of the n8n workflows you intend to control.
Setup/Usage
- Import the Workflow: Import the provided JSON into your n8n instance.
- Configure Telegram Trigger:
- Add your Telegram Bot API Token credential to the
Telegram Triggernode. - Ensure the
Telegram Triggeris set to listen for messages.
- Add your Telegram Bot API Token credential to the
- Configure Telegram Node:
- Add your Telegram Bot API Token credential to the
Telegramnode. - Set the
Chat IDin theTelegramnode to the chat ID of the user(s) who will be sending commands.
- Add your Telegram Bot API Token credential to the
- Configure n8n Node:
- Add your n8n API Key credential (or configure basic authentication) to the
n8nnode. This node will be used to interact with your n8n instance's API.
- Add your n8n API Key credential (or configure basic authentication) to the
- Authorize Users (Code Node): The
Codenode likely contains logic to authorize specific Telegram chat IDs. You will need to modify this node to include your own Telegram chat ID(s) to prevent unauthorized access. - Activate the Workflow: Once configured, activate the workflow.
- Send Commands: You can now send commands to your Telegram bot from the authorized chat. Examples:
/list_workflows/activate_workflow 123(replace123with your workflow ID)/deactivate_workflow 456/execute_workflow 789/error_workflow(to test error handling)
