Who is this template for?

You are in the bad habit of always checking your feed to see if there are new videos? This workflow will help you get rid of this habit by delivering an email notification for each new video posted from the channels you are subscribed to. No need to check your feed again: no email = no new video.

How it works

Every hour (by default), we:

  • Fetch all your YouTube subscriptions from the YouTube Data v3 API.
  • Get a list of the latest videos of each channel through RSS (we don't use YouTube's API for this step as it would put us over the daily quota).
  • Send you a simple yet beautiful email for each new video that was published since the last run of the workflow. To go to the video, simply click on the thumbnail.

Caveats

Because of the way this workflow is implemented, if your n8n instance stops, you will not get emails for the videos you missed when your instance is back online. The situation could be improved if n8n gave us an easy way to access the last successful execution's timestamp.

Set up instructions

  1. Complete the Set up credentials step when you first open the workflow. You'll need YouTube OAuth2 API and SMTP credentials.
  2. In the Send an email for each new video step, set the email address from which the email will be sent (an email address that your SMTP credentials allow sending from) and the email address to which you are going to send the email to (can be the same).

Optional steps

  1. From the Schedule Trigger step, you can change the check frequency (default: every hour).
  2. If there are channels that you do not want notifications from, you can add their channel ID to the list in the Filter out channels step. To get a channel's ID, go to its main page, click on the description, then "Share channel" and finally "Copy channel ID".
  3. By default, shorts are excluded. But if you want them, simply remove the Filter out shorts step from the workflow.

Automated YouTube Subscription Notifications with RSS and Email

This n8n workflow automates the process of checking for new videos from your YouTube subscriptions via RSS feeds and sending email notifications for new content.

What it does

This workflow simplifies staying updated with your favorite YouTube channels by:

  1. Scheduling Checks: Periodically triggers to check for new content.
  2. Fetching YouTube RSS Feeds: Retrieves the latest videos from a specified YouTube channel's RSS feed.
  3. Filtering for New Videos: Compares the fetched videos with previously seen videos (implicitly, as RSS feeds typically provide new items first or the workflow would need a persistent data store to track seen items, which is not present in the provided JSON).
  4. Extracting Video Details: Parses the RSS feed to get video titles, links, and other relevant information.
  5. Sending Email Notifications: For each new video found, it sends an email notification with the video details.
  6. Error Handling: Includes a "Stop and Error" node, suggesting that if certain conditions are not met or an unexpected issue occurs, the workflow will stop and report an error.

Prerequisites/Requirements

  • n8n Instance: A running n8n instance to host and execute the workflow.
  • SMTP Credentials: Configured SMTP credentials in n8n for the "Send Email" node to send notifications.
  • YouTube Channel IDs: The YouTube channel IDs for which you want to receive notifications. These will be used to construct the RSS feed URLs.
  • Email Address: A recipient email address where notifications will be sent.

Setup/Usage

  1. Import the Workflow: Import the provided JSON into your n8n instance.
  2. Configure the Schedule Trigger:
    • Open the "Schedule Trigger" node.
    • Set your desired interval for how often the workflow should run (e.g., every hour, daily).
  3. Configure the RSS Read Node:
    • Open the "RSS Read" node.
    • In the "URL" field, enter the RSS feed URL for the YouTube channel you want to monitor. YouTube RSS feed URLs typically follow the format: https://www.youtube.com/feeds/videos.xml?channel_id=YOUR_CHANNEL_ID. Replace YOUR_CHANNEL_ID with the actual ID of the YouTube channel.
    • You might need to add multiple "RSS Read" nodes or modify this node to dynamically fetch multiple RSS feeds if you want to monitor several channels.
  4. Configure the Send Email Node:
    • Open the "Send Email" node.
    • Select your SMTP credentials.
    • Set the "To" email address for sending notifications.
    • Customize the "Subject" and "Body" of the email using expressions to include details from the RSS feed (e.g., {{ $json.title }} for the video title, {{ $json.link }} for the video URL).
  5. Activate the Workflow: Save and activate the workflow.

The workflow will now automatically check the specified YouTube RSS feeds at your defined interval and send email notifications for any new videos found.
