Import workflows and map their credentials using a multi-form
Purpose
This workflow allows you to import any workflow from a file or another n8n instance and map the credentials easily.

How it works
- A multi-form setup guides you through the entire process
- At the beginning you have two options:
- Upload a workflow file (JSON)
- Copy workflow from a remote n8n instance
- If you choose the second option, you get to choose one of your predefined (in the Settings node) remote instances first, then it retrieves a list of all the workflows using the n8n API which you then can choose a workflow from.
- Now both initial options come together - the workflow file is being processed
- In parallel all credentials of the current instance are being retrieved using the Execute Command node
- The next form page enables a mapping of all the credentials used in the workflow. The matching happens between the names (because one workflow can contain different credentials of the same type) of the original credentials and the ones available on the current instance. Every option then shows all available credentials of the same type. In addition the user has always the choice to create a new credential on the fly.
- For every option which was set to create a new credential, an empty credential is being created on the current instance using the n8n API. An emoji is being appended to the name, which indicates that it needs to be populated.
- Finally the workflow gets updated with the new credential ID’s and created on the current instance using the n8n API. Then the user gets a message, if the process has succeeded or not.
Setup
- Select your credentials in the nodes which require those
- Configure your remote instance(s) in the Settings node. (You can skip this step, if you only want to use the File Upload feature)
- Every instance is defined as object with the keys name, apiKey and baseUrl. Those instances are then wrapped inside an array. You can find an example described within a note on the workflow canvas.
How to use
- Grab the (production) URL of the Form from the first node
- Open the URL and follow the instructions given in the multi-form
Disclaimer
- Security: Beware, that all credentials are being decrypted and processed within the workflow. Also the API keys to other n8n instances are stored within the workflow.
- This solution is primarily meant for transferring data between testing environments. For production use consider the n8n enterprise edition which provides a reliable way to deploy workflows between different environments without the need of manual credential mapping.
n8n Workflow: Import Workflows and Map Credentials (Multi-Form)
This n8n workflow provides a robust solution for importing new workflows into your n8n instance and intelligently mapping their credential requirements to existing credentials. It leverages a multi-step process, including file handling, data transformation, API interactions, and conditional logic, to streamline the deployment of new automation.
What it does
This workflow orchestrates the following key steps:
- Triggers on Form Submission: The workflow is initiated by an
n8n Form Triggernode, suggesting it expects input from a user-facing form. This form likely provides the workflow file(s) to be imported and potentially other configuration details. - Reads Workflow Files: It reads the incoming workflow data from the submitted form, likely handling
.jsonfiles containing n8n workflow definitions. - Extracts Workflow Data: The
Extract from Filenode processes the binary workflow files, converting them into structured JSON data that n8n can work with. - Splits Out Individual Workflows: If multiple workflows are submitted in a single file or as an array, the
Split Outnode separates them into individual items for independent processing. - Removes Duplicate Workflow Definitions: The
Remove Duplicatesnode ensures that only unique workflow definitions proceed, preventing redundant imports. - Sorts Workflow Data: The
Sortnode organizes the workflow data, which might be useful for consistent processing or debugging. - Prepares Workflow Import Data: A
Setnode prepares the workflow data for the n8n API import by setting necessary fields and potentially transforming the structure. - Imports Workflow via n8n API: An
HTTP Requestnode makes an API call to the n8n instance to import the prepared workflow. - Processes Import Response: The workflow then checks the response from the n8n API.
- Conditional Credential Mapping:
- If Import Successful: If the workflow import is successful, a
Codenode likely extracts credential requirements from the newly imported workflow. It then uses anHTTP Requestnode to fetch existing credentials from the n8n instance. - Maps Credentials: Another
Codenode then compares the required credentials of the new workflow with the available credentials and attempts to map them. - Updates Workflow with Mapped Credentials: An
HTTP Requestnode updates the newly imported workflow with the mapped credentials. - Handles No Credentials Needed: If the imported workflow does not require any credentials, a
No Operation, do nothingnode is executed.
- If Import Successful: If the workflow import is successful, a
- Error Handling/Fallback: The
Ifnode and subsequentNo Operation, do nothingnodes suggest that the workflow has branches for successful operations and potentially for cases where no specific credential mapping is needed or if an import fails. - Executes Post-Import Commands (Optional): An
Execute Commandnode is present, which could be used for various post-import tasks, such as clearing cache, restarting services, or logging, depending on its configuration.
Prerequisites/Requirements
- n8n Instance: An active n8n instance where this workflow will be imported and executed.
- n8n API Access: The n8n instance needs to be configured with an API key or other authentication method that allows the
HTTP Requestnodes to interact with the n8n API for importing workflows and managing credentials. - Workflow Files: JSON files containing the n8n workflow definitions you wish to import.
- Existing Credentials (for mapping): Credentials already configured in your n8n instance that can be mapped to the requirements of the imported workflows.
Setup/Usage
- Import the Workflow: Download the provided JSON and import it into your n8n instance.
- Configure n8n API Credential:
- Locate the
HTTP Requestnodes that interact with the n8n API. - Ensure they are configured with an n8n API credential that has sufficient permissions to import workflows and list/update credentials.
- Locate the
- Configure the
n8n Form Trigger:- Access the
n8n Form Triggernode. - Design the form to accept the workflow JSON file(s) as input. You might want to include fields for other metadata if needed.
- Activate the workflow.
- Access the
- Run the Workflow:
- Submit your n8n workflow JSON file(s) through the configured form.
- The workflow will automatically import the new workflows and attempt to map their credential requirements based on your existing n8n credentials.
- Monitor the workflow execution for any errors or successful imports and mappings.

If AI returns non-JSON, keep “Return only a JSON array” as the last line of the prompt and keep jsonOutput enabled. Consider adding validation on parsing.warnings to gate Salesforce writes. For discounts/taxes in OLI: Standard OLI fields don’t support per-line discount amounts directly; model them in UnitPrice or custom fields. Replace the Composite API URL with your org’s domain or use the Salesforce node’s Bulk Upsert for simplicity.
