- ElevenLabs adds native pronunciation audio (word + example)
- Everything gets packaged into a real .apkg file
- The deck lands in your email, ready to import into Anki
- A backup copy saves to Google Sheets
Why I built this I was spending hours making flashcards by hand for language learning. Finding images, recording audio, formatting everything for Anki... it took forever. This workflow does all of that in about 3 minutes.
Setup (~15 min)

Create Anki Language Flashcards with GPT-4, DALL-E, and ElevenLabs
This n8n workflow automates the creation of rich, multimedia language flashcards for Anki. By leveraging the power of AI models like GPT-4 for text generation, DALL-E for image creation, and ElevenLabs for audio synthesis, it streamlines the process of learning new vocabulary and phrases.
The workflow is triggered by a form submission, allowing users to easily input the target language, a word or phrase, and its English translation. It then generates comprehensive flashcard content, including definitions, example sentences, images, and audio, and sends it to a specified Gmail address, ready for import into Anki.
What it does
- Listens for Form Submissions: The workflow starts when a user submits data through an n8n form.
- Generates Flashcard Content (Code): A Code node processes the form input to structure the request for AI services.
- Creates Text Content with GPT-4 (HTTP Request): It sends a request to the OpenAI API (or a compatible service) to generate detailed text for the flashcard, including definitions and example sentences, based on the provided word/phrase and language.
- Generates Image with DALL-E (HTTP Request): It then uses DALL-E (via an HTTP Request) to create a relevant image for the flashcard, enhancing visual learning.
- Synthesizes Audio with ElevenLabs (HTTP Request): For pronunciation, it sends the word/phrase to ElevenLabs (via an HTTP Request) to generate natural-sounding audio.
- Loops Over Items (Split in Batches): If multiple items are processed or if there are intermediate steps that produce multiple outputs, this node ensures each item is handled individually.
- Compiles and Sends Flashcards via Gmail: Finally, it compiles all the generated text, image URLs, and audio URLs into a structured format and sends it as an email to a predefined Gmail address. This email is intended to be easily parsable for Anki import.
- Responds to Webhook: After processing, it sends a response back to the triggering form, indicating completion.
Prerequisites/Requirements
To use this workflow, you will need:
- n8n Instance: A running instance of n8n.
- OpenAI API Key: For GPT-4 text generation and DALL-E image generation.
- ElevenLabs API Key: For generating speech audio.
- Google Sheets Credential (Optional): Although a Google Sheets node is present in the JSON, it is not connected in the provided workflow. If you intend to use it, you'll need a Google Sheets API credential.
- Gmail Credential: To send the generated flashcards via email.
Setup/Usage
- Import the Workflow: Download the provided JSON and import it into your n8n instance.
- Configure Credentials:
- Set up your OpenAI API Key credential for the HTTP Request nodes interacting with OpenAI (GPT-4 and DALL-E).
- Set up your ElevenLabs API Key credential for the HTTP Request node interacting with ElevenLabs.
- Configure your Gmail credential for the Gmail node.
- Configure the n8n Form Trigger:
- Activate the "On form submission" trigger node.
- Customize the form fields as needed (e.g.,
targetLanguage,wordOrPhrase,englishTranslation).
- Review and Customize AI Prompts:
- Examine the "Code" node and the HTTP Request nodes for OpenAI and ElevenLabs. Adjust the prompts and parameters to fine-tune the AI output to your specific flashcard requirements.
- Set Destination Email: In the Gmail node, specify the recipient email address where you want the flashcards to be sent.
- Activate the Workflow: Once all credentials and configurations are set, activate the workflow.
- Use the Form: Access the public URL of the n8n form trigger and submit your language learning requests. The generated flashcards will be sent to your specified Gmail address.
