This workflow allows you to receive a Mattermost message when meeting notes get added to the Notion.

Prerequisites

  1. Create a table in Notion similar to this: Meeting Notes
  2. Follow the steps mentioned in the documentation, to create credentials for the Notion Trigger node.
  3. Create create credentials for Mattermost.

workflow-screenshot

Notion Trigger: The Notion Trigger node will trigger the workflow when new data gets added to Notion.

IF node: This node will check if the notes belong to the team Marketing. If the team is Marketing the node will true, otherwise false.

Mattermost node: This node will send a message about the new data in the channel 'Marketing' in Mattermost. If you have a different channel, use that instead. You can even replace the Mattermost node with nodes of other messaging platforms, like Slack, Telegram, Discord, etc.

NoOp node: Adding this node here is optional, as the absence of this node won't make a difference to the functioning of the workflow.

Receive a Mattermost Message When New Record Gets Added to Notion

This n8n workflow automates the process of notifying a Mattermost channel whenever a new record is added to a specified Notion database. This ensures that your team stays updated on new Notion entries without manual checks.

What it does

  1. Monitors Notion Database: The workflow uses a Notion Trigger node to constantly watch a designated Notion database for new items.
  2. Sends Mattermost Message: When a new item is detected in the Notion database, the workflow sends a message to a configured Mattermost channel.
  3. Conditional Logic (Placeholder): An "If" node is included in the workflow, but without any defined conditions or subsequent actions for its true/false branches. Currently, it acts as a pass-through for the Mattermost message in its "false" branch, and its "true" branch leads to a "No Operation" node. This suggests potential for future expansion to add conditional logic based on Notion item properties.

Prerequisites/Requirements

  • n8n Instance: A running n8n instance.
  • Notion Account: A Notion account with a database you wish to monitor. You will need to create an internal integration in Notion and grant it access to your database.
  • Mattermost Account: A Mattermost account with a channel where you want to receive notifications. You will need to configure an Incoming Webhook in Mattermost.

Setup/Usage

  1. Import the Workflow:
    • Copy the provided JSON code.
    • In your n8n instance, click "New" in the workflows section.
    • Click the "Import from JSON" button and paste the workflow JSON.
  2. Configure Notion Trigger:
    • Click on the "Notion Trigger" node.
    • Set up your Notion credential. If you don't have one, click "Create New" and follow the instructions to connect your Notion workspace (requires an internal integration token and sharing the database with the integration).
    • Select the Notion database you want to monitor from the "Database ID" dropdown.
    • Ensure the "Trigger On" option is set to "New Records".
  3. Configure Mattermost Node:
    • Click on the "Mattermost" node.
    • Set up your Mattermost credential. If you don't have one, click "Create New" and provide the "Webhook URL" from your Mattermost Incoming Webhook configuration.
    • In the "Channel" field, specify the Mattermost channel where the messages should be posted (e.g., #general).
    • In the "Message" field, you can customize the message content using expressions to include data from the new Notion record. For example:
      New Notion record added: {{ $json.properties.Name.title[0].plain_text }}
      Link: {{ $json.url }}

(Adjust Name based on the actual name property of your Notion database.)
  4. Activate the Workflow:
    • Click the "Activate" toggle in the top right corner of the n8n editor to start the workflow.

Now, whenever a new record is added to your specified Notion database, a message will be posted to your Mattermost channel.

Note on the "If" Node: The "If" node currently does not have any conditions configured. Its "False" branch directly leads to the Mattermost node, while its "True" branch leads to a "No Operation" node. You can expand this node to add conditional logic (e.g., only send a Mattermost message if a certain property in Notion meets a condition) by adding conditions and connecting additional nodes to its "True" output.
